A human being is like a tree, planted on Earth, floating in the universe. The leaves are the thoughts (mind), the trunk is the body, the Earth is the past and future of the human, and the universe is the soul. Some of us take ourselves to be the leaves (mind). We tremble in the slightest breeze, we continuously search for better exposure to the sun (wealth), but this never satisfies nor lasts for long. And we are terrified when autumn (fall / change) comes. Some of us take ourselves to be the trunk (body). We are sturdy, we stand straight in the wind (difficulties), and we don't fear the coming of fall. However, we fear the things that appear out of control (hurricanes, swarms of insects, other humans with chainsaws). Some of us take ourselves to be the proud ground in which the tree is planted. We know we have a celebrated past and a promising future. We know everything is connected, that all our actions matter, and we try to make the whole Earth a better place. We fear the destructive careless actions of other humans and we try to teach them how to care. We are frightened by global warming, passing-by asteroids, and the far-into-the-future turning of the Sun into a red giant that will engulf the Earth. Some of us take ourselves to be the universe (soul). We know mortality is an illusion, that everything is one - coming from the same source and going back to the same source. We try to teach others about oneness and we celebrate life in all its forms. We shed tears for a squashed ant, laugh with babies, and dance with fellow humans. We fear becoming special, separate, and forgetting everything we know. And the dream goes on. Some of us take ourselves to be the 'cold' observer of it all. We are not what we see. No matter how the world changes, it doesn't impact us. We are changeless. We are the formless dreamer. We know time, space, and volition are illusions - the dance of form. We imagine we fear nothing. Some of us smile and experience all these games. We realized we are always looking in the mirror, and we are the mirror. We know when we dream. And some of us know nothing...

Adyashanti has a tree model too. Leaves, branches&trunk, roots are analagous to body&senses, consciousness, and 'primordial being.'

What spiritual practice would you recommend to be upgraded instead?

What spiritual practice would you recommend to be upgraded instead? Well, we have to do a few muscle tests first. But as soon as we have the results we will send you a tailor made personal growth plan.

At the intersection of the Sun and the Earth Todays rain meets last decades death And we get to breathe The roots reach down, the leaves reach up Where does the tree end and the Earth begin? Our feet, lifting up and moving us about as they do serve as agents to a hideously clever and insidiously comic deception. The deceit of distinction. Fire up the saw blades. There are walls to erect. 2x4x8 Cut me some lumber now. B1tch.
